The Albion Peace Community
History
In the spring of 2004 Tom Brown II and others from across the state attended the Michigan Area Peace Event in Lansing, MI where Peter Story from South Africa was the speaker. It was agreed at that event that each district of the United Methodist Church would have a peace group. At that event Rev. Mark Thompson, two members of Bellvue UMC, Tom, and Ilene and John Dack from Albion First UMC set May 4 as the date to start a group in the Albion District. Representatives were at the May 4 meeting from Albion First UMC, the Albion College Peace Action student group and their faculty advisor. There followed several meetings during the summer of 2004 in which a core group selected officers (Tom Brown II as temporary convenor and John Williams as temporary scribe), found a place for the center in the Albion First United Methodist Church, articulated their passions in the areas of peace and justice, began collecting books for a library, solicited startup funds from the Conference Board of Church and Society, and planned an "Eat and Talk About Peace" event for Sept. 14. |

We are a team of adults and youth from our First United Methodist Church, Quakers, others such as UCC and Unitarian and College students of varied backgrounds. Our projects include programs and speakers, displays, demonstrations, a reference library with magazines in the corridor outside our church office, and research into peace issues.Part of our support comes from West Michigan Conference of UMC. We are to reach out to churches and all people from Jackson to Three Rivers, and from the Michigan – Ohio - Indiana border halfway to Lansing.
