Family and the Faithful Life
Sermon Schedule for December-January
|Decc 24||Christmas Eve Service
|Bring your family (whatever family looks like for you!) and listen to a new take on what this holy day means for us today.|
|Dec 27||Covenant Renewal||For centuries, Methodists have gathered around the time of the new year to remember and renew their commitment to following Jesus, obeying God, and loving one another. This is a serious and meaningful time, and a great chance to start again with Jesus.
David Habicht, Guest Preacher
|Jan 3||Shame!||That’s not a word we use very often, but it’s the big meany behind fear of public speaking, fear of failure, of bad grades, of looking the fool. But early Christians like Paul said that our whole Christian message is foolishness, and we should quit trying to look smart or important. Are you ready to take on shame?
|Jan 10||Death!||Even people with every reason to quit still hold desperately on to life. It can be our final fear, and it may be in the background of every other fear. And don’t think that being a Christian makes this fear go away!|
|Jan 17||Change!||We put so much effort into keeping things the way they are. And why not? We’re comfortable. Perhaps the fear of change is the real reason why we get upset about terrorists or new bosses or new governments—and the real reason why we don’t change our own lives the way we could.|
|Jan 24||Loneliness!||For many people, the most feared future is to be in a care facility with no one coming to visit. Many are afraid of never finding love, and we seem to have a whole world that has forgotten how to be a community. Loneliness may be the great modern fear, despite Jesus saying, “I will be with you always.”|
|Jan 31||Can There Be Life Without Fear?||What? While I’m still alive? Most of us find it hard to imagine living without the constant background of fear, and even despair. What kind of transformation can Jesus offer, that will take it away? And what’s it worth to you, to get rid of fear?|
