Cookies and Pies

I am trying a month’s membership for creating greeting cards online. Recently, I was enticed to create a card for my daughter and grandchildren that featured a talking cat. After carefully writing the message to appear to be from a cousin of our second cat, I had to revise it several times to get the voice to pronounce “Sweetie Pie” instead of “Sweet Pea” or “Sweetie Pea.” Pleased with my efforts, I pressed the “Send” button and was promptly told it couldn’t be sent. My faithful computer guru, John, went to great lengths to interpret the repeated messages and finally disabled my computer from blocking the “cookie” needed to send my precious card. John explained that there was a barrier that kept me from sending the card. Neither of us knew at first that the barrier had been put there by an anti-spy-ware program. We sometimes have barriers to our understanding or our being disciples. We need someone else to point out the barriers or remove them for us. That’s one of the values of small groups such as our Bible study groups and UMW circles.

Last fall I mentioned that I had purchased Swedish cookies at the Toronto IKEA. I took two of the four packages of cookies out of the freezer to share with the Delamarter Circle when eighteen of us met at our home in April. The two kinds were identical in shape but slightly different in color. In order to figure out which ones were almond flavor or ginger flavor, we had to taste to “see.” With laughter and delight, some tasted more than one just to determine the flavors. We were blessed to have Shelly Bagley lead us to a better understanding of the people who live in Israel/Palestine, a place of ancient conflicts. In a serious vein, she helped us see that as we “taste” the experiences of our Middle Eastern neighbors, we come to “see” we are all “Made in the Image of God.”

It’s not too early to begin thinking about School of Christian Mission occurring July 23-26 at Albion College. Tuesday, July 22nd is Drive-In Day.

The “Great Pie in the Sky” Silent Auction is coming up on May 4th. Because we already have sufficient funds for Violet’s high school fees, the proceeds from the auction will go towards our own Youth Group’s mission trip to Arizona this summer. Bake a pie. Buy a pie. Support our youth.
